Pares Et Circenses*

In the 21st Century the saying "Bread & Entertainment" highly differentiates from the 17th or 18th century. When I talk about the differences what i mean is that earlier in the 17th and 18th century they used to "fill" up the audience's stomachs no matter what kind of entertaintment it was so that the people and audience wouldnt overthrow the government and as a means to gain political power.  When they came up with this phrase it was a perfect idea because no one can say no to free food and great entertainment without being distracted.

In my opinion, today the only place they actually use this saying "bread and entertainment" is in television, music, video games, cellphones and other types of medias. Today we live in a consumer culture where everybody wants the new "product" or want to try out the newest brand that came out or own the newest piece of technology. It is all given to us from each angle and all we have to do is just supply the money. My example might be kind of going into another direction since its not a "free" item, but it is an object that we demand on a daily basis and they are actually produced daily. What we seem to forget are the very important issues that are being faced today in our world and that is one way we are distracted, with all the new high technology games and devices we own today. As a population, we are easily distracted from horrible events such as natural disasters, crimes, political issues, revolutions, enviromental issues, and many more. These issues are not as important as they once were to people because they are distracted by other gadgets that are taking over people's lives.
